As a reader and a librarian, I like the idea of finding new and innovative ways to promote books to people.

HOWEVER, the book trailers that I have watched has turned me off from reading the book rather than inspire to give the book a chance. They are just poorly created and look very cheesy.

BUT - I would suggest that readers and librarians look at the videos and form their own opinions. I hope that as the media becomes more popular that the quality of the product improves.

Right now you can see some really good book videos on Borders site-

http://beta.bordersstores.com/online/store/ArticleView_romreadingroom

Those are all COS videos.

The "B movie quality" has a lot to do with the fact that they are video and not film. Author, contrary to what people might think, can't afford a $100,000 commercial (which is what trailers really are).
So, when book trailers were first put out they were done on video to keep them cost effective.

The fact is, they sell books. Why else would booksellers use them or publisher's pay for them? If they didn't, booksellers would make authors or publishers pay to put them on their sites. But they don't, because the videos help sell books.

If the videos (cheesy or not) sell books and get more people to read, are they worth it? I think so. People have become so visual and how else can books compete?

Authors and publishers don't compete with each other (or they shouldn't) they compete with movies, TV, video games and music. Now books can be visual too. Books can reach more people and remind them that books are entertainment and informational.

Readersentertainment.tv has trailers, author interviews, behind the scenes stuff and oringal programming. The site was built to entice potential readers into giving books a chance.

People like trailers or they don't. But, if they get more people to read I hope others will continue to give them a chance and support the idea.
